Nostepinne, Hand-turned Wooden Yarn Ball Winder, Figured Maple Wood

Hand-turned wooden Nostepinne (yarn ball-winder), made from western maple, and finished with a light coat of beeswax. These are medieval tools for creating center-pull balls of yarn, typically in a flat "cake" form, but also as round balls.

The Nostepinnes are between 10.5 and 12 inches in length overall, and the "tip" of the tapered end is approximately 3/8" in diameter.

Western maple will often have great figuring. Due to the wood being a natural material, variations will occur, ranging from nearly no figuring, to very highly figured wood. There will also be variations in grain and color. Occasionally, there will be defects in the wood (bark inclusions, small pockets, etc.); I strive to make sure that these will not affect the functioning of the Nostepinne. Because they are hand-turned, slight variations in dimension and form will occur.

The Nostepinnes have been sanded smooth, and finished with a light coat of beeswax rubbed into the wood.
